Sometimes in 1970, there was the six days war between Israel and the Arabs, this war led to quadrupling increase in oil price over night. All of a sudden Nigeria became rich with a lot of money to the extent that Federal government of Nigeria in her magnanimity ordered the immediate effect implementation increase of salary for all the civil servants(Udoji salary awards,  1974). All civil servants' salary were doubled. Of course with the new found wealth a lot of people wanted build their own houses but there was severe cement shortage in the country. The demand for cement and other building materials was astronomical, under pressure from the military the government committed itself to a massive Barrack building program and thus ordered 16 million metric tonnes of cement for the building of Army Barracks alone, amounting to 80% of the country’s total cement import. Lagos to increase the engine capacity of lagferry boats

In furtherance of the @jidesanwoolu administration to improve water transportation, the Lagos Ferry Services (@Lagferry) took deliveries of 6 Units of Yamaha 300Hp Ultra Long Outboard 4-Stroke Engines to boost the efficiency of Lagos Ferry Operations. The quality addition will be immediately installed to increase the engine capacities of MV Ejirin, MV Ipakodo and MV Alausa to 600Hp per boat and increase their cruising speed by 40%. This means that, these bigger boats will complete a journey of 23Km (Ikorodu - Lagos Island) within 40 minutes instead of 70 minutes.

Water Transportation: Lagos Scale up work on New Jetties and Four Ferries

The Lagos State Government on Thursday said work is progressing steadily on the construction of nine jetties with shelter and shoreline protection and channelization of four new ferry routes as part of efforts to boost water transportation in line with the multi-modal transport policy across the State. Speaking at the annual Ministerial Press Briefing to mark the third year anniversary of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode’s administration held at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre in Alausa, Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure Development, Mr. Babatunde Adejare said the projects, upon completion, would transform water transportation and thereby contribute to the vision of the present administration to reduce pressure on road infrastructure.
