At least seven persons, including students, on wednesday 30th May 2018 died in a boat mishap that occurred at Akere, Ipokia Local Government Area of Ogun State, witnesses said. The accident, which, according to reports, occurred at about 11am on the waterways, midway between Akere and Apa in Badagry, also left several others missing. The reports also confirmed that the incident happened when the boat conveying passengers and goods broke down midway into the journey. According to eyewitnesses, the boat was overloaded and passengers did not put on standard life jackets. “The boat was conveying the passengers, including secondary school students, several bags of garri and nine motorcycles,” one of the eyewitnesses said. Chairman of Ipokia Local Government, Senayon Josu, said four persons died in the mishap while 10 survived. But witnesses claim seven persons died in the incidence. At least 25 people survived when two open fibre boats collided in Ojo area of Lagos state around 7pm on Friday 25th of May 2018 . Damilola Emmanuel, managing director of the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), who confirmed the incident, said one of the boats was driving at full capacity with 22 passengers, while the other had just the captain and deckhand on board. He said immediately the accident occurred, the patrol team at the Ojo terminal was able to move swiftly to rescue the situation. "One boat was going from Liverpool to Ojo while the other was doing a return trip from same location," he said. ”LASWA response team was able to rescue all passengers from the capsized boats and transported them to shore. The Lagos State Government on Thursday said work is progressing steadily on the construction of nine jetties with shelter and shoreline protection and channelization of four new ferry routes as part of efforts to boost water transportation in line with the multi-modal transport policy across the State. Speaking at the annual Ministerial Press Briefing to mark the third year anniversary of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode’s administration held at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre in Alausa, Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure Development, Mr. Babatunde Adejare said the projects, upon completion, would transform water transportation and thereby contribute to the vision of the present administration to reduce pressure on road infrastructure.
