Killing the Phobia of Travelling by Water
One of the challenges of water transportation mode in Lagos state has been linked to phobia for water. It was established in one of my post last year that 90% people residing in Lagos state can not swim due to phobia for water.
Most people are acrophobia but they still travel by air. Safety in water transportation can be liken to that of air transportation.
Today I will be sharing with you eight tips to kill that hydrophobia and encourage you to travel by water
* Reconfigure your mind and believe that water transportation is the safest of all mode of transportation.
* On your first trip, be in company of a friend or people who are used to traveling by water.
* Wear a life jacket and ensure it is worn properly
* Do not panic while on board
* Listen to the Deckhands and Captains instructions
* Ask questions
* Travel by water transportation mode again
* Take a course in swimming
Swimming and water survival skills are not difficult to learn. Many cultures (especially Ogu people in Badagry) have recognised the value of such skill.
Personal swimming survival is the ability to help oneself from troubles in water without the help of others or staying afloat while waiting for help. Personal swimming survival also extend to helping people to become safer in and around the water. This involves learning to swim and other survival techniques.
Why do you need a personal swimming skill?
- A person might not be able to swim to safety after falling over board or swimming out too far
- someone might be carried away by a strong current
- unforseen situation or occurence may develop such as cramps or an inability to swim because of a very cold water.
- A pedestrian may fall from a pier or be swept from shore by a large wave
Personal swimming survival skills includes;
1) Survival floating i. e HELP - Heat Escape Lessening Position
2) Treading water and sculling
3) Orienting Self underwater
I encourage you to pursue a personal swimming survival skill. The knowledge and skill may help you and also save a life someday

1.2million people around the world died by drowning every year. This is like 2 persons per minute. 70% of these people are teenagers and children
